(warning: please excuse my inability to even write properly because Avengers)
Attention Avengers! Thor's jealous brother, Loki is back; and this time, with an army. The Avengers must assemble from all over the world in order to take on Thor's more than mischievous adopted brother.
The timeline of this film comes after Thor, Captain America, Iron Man 2, and The Incredible Hulk, all whom join together through S.H.E.I.L.D. The start of the film shows what each of the Avengers, plus Loki, have been doing since we last saw them. Perhaps Loki's doings and whereabouts are the most important to this story. Loki is very different from how we last saw him in Thor. He's gone quite insane and has become very power crazy, seeking not only revenge on his brother but seeking respect from the humans. He has stolen a perhaps unlimited source of power called the Tesseract and assembled a Chitauri army to defeat anyone who gets in his way. But Loki's plan is even more complex than that; he's done so much more than what meets the eye. I'll warn you, this film is exciting from start to finish and there's no calming down, ever.
What I liked most about this film was more than the adrenaline-rush-causing action, it was the depth of the characters. These heroes (and villains) were more than just two dimensional characters, they had so much personality which is really what kept the story moving so well. All the actors appeared to really understand their characters and embodied them all so well. The personality clashes of the Avengers was very comical yet believable. Steve Rogers' "take one for the team" attitude and Tony Stark's "the team had better take one for me" philosophy kept everyone laughing. Another interesting thing that these characters brought to the screen was how well they all stayed in character in the setting and how that really helped the story. The comedy that other characters find in Thor and Loki's formal way of speaking is so priceless. But the most important thing is that these characters learning to work together was really great to watch.
The Avengers is not a typical action movie. It was actually shot so nicely; much better than I was expecting. You may know from my other reviews that I am no fan of a shaky camera, so keep in mind that I LOVED this film. I really must congratulate and thank Joss Whedon for creating such an amazing TRIBUTE to The Avengers, even though we all know that this is just the beginning. As a fan of the comic books, Joss Whedon obviously knew what absolutely had to be included in the movie. If you're a fan of the comic books, you've probably already seen this film but I'm almost positive you loved it. For people who haven't read any of the comic books or seen any of the earlier movies, the film is quite easy to follow as long as you pay attention (however, I suggest doing a little background research beforehand in order to get the full effect).
I would just like to say before I close that there is no reason that you should not watch this movie; it is as close to perfection as movies get. Every aspect of it was so great there's almost no point in even talking about it. JUST GO SEE IT! I saw this film on opening night and there was plenty of cheering, applause, and even a standing ovation. So just remember this on your way to the cinema to be blown away... "I have an army"
